Being bride is one of the greatest feeling we get after
being born as a girl. And every girl gets a chance to be bride in her life.
Since I am from Newari community, here we become bride not only once but
thrice. Yes you heard right, three times including the marriage with a
bridegroom. And the whole culture, tradition and process is incredibly amazing
and beautiful.
Everyone is aware of the marriage that every girl does with
a boy. But two marriages that I had done and every Newari girl does is new to
other people (except Newari). The differences in these marriages or in our
tradition is that a girl gets married first with a bel (a type of fruit),
second with the sun and third with a boy. First and second marriages must be
done before a girl gets her period.
Now I’m going to write something about these marriages, like
how it is done.
Bel Bibhaha (with bel)
Bel is a kind of fruit but it is not used for eating
purpose. Every girl has her own bel before the whole marriage ceremony starts.
And during the ceremony all bels are kept together and are distributed to
girls. Since a girl marries with bel, it is known as bel bibaha or ihi
(in Newari). It is believed a girl will get a bridegroom according to the size and shape of the bel. All girls wear beautiful bridal dresses with jewelries. Nowadays
girl of very small age are also brought for bel bibaha. This ceremony is
completed in two days. Two different kind of dresses are worn by little girls in this ceremony. It really feels great and lucky that I also got
chance to experience it.
Suryadarsan (with sun)
Suryadarsan (with sun)
Suryadarsan or gufa or bara (in Newari) is done with those girls who had done bel bibaha. It is another type of marriage which is done with sun. Girls are kept locked in a room for 12 days where rays of sun can’t reach. During that time no boys or men can see them. Girls are feed properly and taken good care. A special kind of homemade cream (like a) is used of girls in order to make their skin more soft and beautiful. When girls are kept in gufa, number of girls must be even and if it is odd handmade doll is kept as a pair. I already had experienced it and I loved it. My friends visited me and we played games, had lots of fun.
And once 12 days are completed, girls are made ready with beautiful dress and ornaments. And girls are not allowed to see sun directly at first time, they see sun through a hole they make with their fingers. And then whole puja is done and feast is served.
Bibaha (with boy)
I think I don’t have to explain you guys about it because everybody is totally known to this marriage.
